Overview

To celebrate their 100th anniversay, Boeing teamed up with the Discovery Channel and The Documentary Group to produce The Age of Aerospace. The endeavor spanned the history of flight along with a look to the future. The series aired both on the Discovery Channel and through their site.

After the final cut, the team still had more great content that didn't make it into the film. Boeing and Discovery wanted to provide this supplementary information to users through the Age of Aerospace site.

The entire interactive library can be browsed through a continuous scroll without using navigation. Users also have the option to minimize the documentary while engaging with the library.

Interactive Library

The Interactive Library provides a deeper dive into the content of the film and each topic complements a specific episode. My task was to organize this supplemental content and design responsive templates for presenting different types of information.

Templates

The content we pulled from was not only video that was cut from the film, but a collection of research that including photos, audio, articles and facts. I created thirteen different templates to present this information.

Different templates were created to support different types of media.

Content Management

The interactive library for the site had a wide variety of media and information that needed to be managed and developed. We also needed to provide copies of the site text to be approved by subject matter experts at Boeing. I created a set of cloud documents that would collect all the content for each section and page. After each section was populated, a document was generated and forwarded to Boeing for edits.

A document was created for each topic in the library that began with an outline of all the pages.

Each page had text, media, and metadata that needed to be collected for production. The content deck held all of this information. Color highlight indicated the approval status from Boeing.

The site was designed for two breakpoints: landscape and portrait.

In the end, we put together over 400 pages of content that was offered globally in 60 languages.

Since its launch the site has won many accolades, including a Webby nomination, a Mixx and a Digiday award.
